Montebello, CA: Today, the Mexican American Opportunity Foundation hosted Congresswoman Linda Sanchez and National Council of La Raza President & CEO Janet Murguia
to call attention to two important tax credits that assist all low-income working Americans: The Earned Income Tax Credit and the Child Care Tax Credit.
Ms. Murguia spoke about how these two federal tax credits were helping to lift low-income working Americans out of poverty. Yet, she continued, they are being threatened with elimination because under current law, Congress needs to re-authorize them ever 2 to 3 years.
Congresswoman Sanchez spoke about her recent appointment to the House Ways and Means Committee and that she understood how important these two tax credits were. She went on to say that these two credits should be made permanent to avoid disruption of the credits in the future.
MAOF President Martin Castro highlighted MAOF’s VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistant) Program and how this past year, MAOF staff completed 1,590 federal and state tax returns and brought back over $1.5 million in refunds to families in Los Angeles County.
Over 40 representatives from NCLR’s Southern California Affiliates attended the event.
