Starbucks selected the Mexican American Opportunity Foundation (MAOF) be the beneficiary of “Starbucks Global Day of Service.” This day of service represents Starbucks Global Responsibility by engaging employees and community members in comradery to help contribute more than one million community service hours per year by 2016. The program supports Starbuck’s efforts towards making communities stronger through ethical sourcing, environmental stewardship and community engagement.
On April 23rd, 2016, over 80 Starbuck’s employees meet at MAOF headquarters and volunteered their time to host a community leadership and empowerment event. Over 72 students from the East Los Angeles and surrounding communities participated in this full day of festivity, which played host to a job related seminar and a few job related workshops.
One seminar discussed leadership success and its impact on Starbuck’s Community Responsibility. A panel of three executives from different business sectors discussed their individual success stories and their rise to the top of the corporate ladder, while integrating their commitment into social responsibility in strengthening the communities they serve. In addition, the day offered the youth two workshops consisting of mock interviews and resume writing. The mock interviews entailed: role playing an interview scheme among Starbuck’s District Managers and youth; and receiving constructive feedback on their interviewing strengths and weaknesses, while also recommending areas for improvement. The resume workshop entailed: the purpose of a resume, what to include and not to include in a resume, resume format, content material, and a series of self-assessment of past work experiences, skill sets, education, licenses, certificates, or aptitude.
While the workshops were being conducted, Starbucks volunteers put their social responsibility into action and began painting one of MAOF’s discolored and outdated building and transforming it into a vibrant and welcoming appearance.
MAOF truly appreciates Starbucks and its Foundation on-going financial support of our youth workforce program. Their funding has proven instrumental by enabling MAOF to provide specific services that equip youth with the tools, resources and knowledge to transition into the labor workforce.
MAOF would like to thank Starbucks for their continued support and for selecting our organization to be the beneficiary of Starbucks Global Day of Service. We look forward to our continued partnership and welcome future community engagement opportunities.
